The University of New Brunswick (UNB) undergraduate and graduate students traveled to Sidney, BC for their hydro camp where they were able to spend time on the CSL Heron (CSL Heron – Ocean Mapping Group (unb.ca)), which is loaned to UNB as part of a Joint Partnership Agreement between the Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) and UNB. The nine students collected data using Kongsberg EM712 and Kongsberg EM2040C sonars to support a specific ocean mapping and nautical charting problem given to them. Most of the surveying took place in Brentwood Bay and Saanich Inlet. The data collected was cleaned and processed for the intent to be given to the Saanich First Nations and Tsartlip First Nations who were interested in finding abandoned traps or other interesting features that may be of use to them. On May 10, 2023 the students presented their processes and findings, as well as answering questions from guests.
